Chefchaouen, Chaouen( Xaouen), or the Blue Pearl are all names for the village of Chefchaouen which has taken this name from the two mountains looking like horns, thus Chef( look) ech-Chaoua( horns) giving the meaning of “ look at the horns”. Chaouen was founed in 1471 by Idrissid Dyntasy who are believed to be descendant of the Prophet Mohammed. It’s a Moroccan Andalusian influenced mountain village, mixing white and indigo lime washed colours.
The heart of this village is its Uta el-Hamman Square, where you can access the Kasbah and all parts of the village converge. So, during your stay in Chefchaouen, you might want to explore the old medina, Grand Mosque which the inhabitants of Chaouen refused to pray in since its opening, and Ras el-Ma.
